We’re curious: how are you getting into the holiday spirit this year? Did you start decorating back in early November? Have you been blasting Mariah Carey in the car ? Zero judgement over here for however you’ve decided to celebrate this year – 2020 was a doozy for so many of us!
Our pandemic-fatigue has led us to wanting to reach, safely, outside of our COVID-safe bubbles. If you’re in the same boat, this is a reminder that doing good feels good. So, we’ve highlighted some great charities that are making a serious impact in their respective areas. If you’re in the spirit of giving and don’t know where to turn, we’ve made a holiday giving list for you.
NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund
Through litigation, advocacy, and public education, LDF seeks structural changes to expand democracy, eliminate disparities, and achieve racial justice in a society that fulfills the promise of equality for all Americans. LDF also defends the gains and protections won over the past 80 years of civil rights struggle and works to improve the quality and diversity of judicial and executive appointments.
Plus, right now an anonymous donor is matching all year-end donations! If you want to make your money go further for racial justice, this is a great time to give. The deadline for donation matching is December 31.
Their mission is to realize this promise of the United States Constitution for all and expand the reach of its guarantees. They dare to create a more perfect union — beyond one person, party, or side.
Donations for ACLU are also being matched right now up to $125,000!
Goodwill Industries International
Goodwill organizations collectively pursue a social mission focused on creating jobs and helping individuals find work. In 2019 alone, local Goodwill organizations connected 230,000 people with jobs and provided training and support to more than 25.7 million people.
A donation to Goodwill supports individuals and families looking to build independence and strengthen communities.
The Conservation Fund works with public, private and nonprofit partners to protect America’s legacy of land and water resources through land acquisition, sustainable community and economic development, and leadership training, to emphasize the integration of economic and environmental goals. They invest an impressive over 90% of their annual budget directly to conservation programs.
Donations to the Conservation Fund are also being matched right now, up to $200,000.
Mental Health America
Mental Health America (MHA) is the nation’s leading community-based nonprofit dedicated to addressing the needs of those living with mental illness and promoting the overall mental health of all. MHA’s work is driven by its commitment to promote mental health as a critical part of overall wellness, including prevention services for all, early identification and intervention for those at risk, and integrated care, services, and support for those who need them with recovery as the goal.
A donation to MHA means providing support for services that advocate for mental health in America.
On the note of mental (and physical!) health, make sure that you extend that giving spirit to yourself, too. We’re talking about some coveted self-care time. The holidays during a pandemic may throw us all an extra curveball or two, but it’s nothing that some re-imagined holiday-themed fun can’t handle. Schedule some quality time for yourself and get a couple poses in – even (especially) if things are feeling a bit hectic. After all, if you’re not showing yourself love and compassion, how can you pass it on to others?
And hey, wherever you are right now, we know that it’s been a long year. Deep breaths. You all deserve some time to unwind a little bit. We hope that each of you is able to make space for a pause and (safe) celebration as we look to close out 2020.
Sending you all love, light, and gratitude for these final weeks of this year.
