5 Reasons Peru Should Be On Your Bucket List, Through the Eyes of an Explorer

There’s a place where ancient history meets vibrant culture, where the mountains echo stories of the Inca Empire, and the air is filled with warmth. That place is Peru, and once you visit, its beauty will stay with you long after you’ve left.

If you’re considering a trip to Peru (we head there next in May!), here are five of our favorite things about this destination, enriched by the experiences of our very own Mekeila Erspamer, an Adventure Travel Specialist here at The Travel Yogi. (P.S. the pictures included here come straight from Mekeila’s camera lens!)

1. The People

Peru’s locals are known for their warmth and hospitality (seriously, you might never want to leave). Mekeila was particularly moved by her visit to the remote Huama community in the Andes.

“We felt so isolated in the tops of the mountains, yet the Quechua people welcomed us with traditional clothes, Cantua flower necklaces, and the most abundant, wholesome meal,” she shared. (Honestly, it sounds like a hug in meal form.)

The genuine kindness of the Quechua community and their deep connection to the land make every interaction feel meaningful. These moments of cultural exchange highlight the powerful humanity that travel can bring and remind us of how little we need to feel truly content. You might even leave with some new friends!

2. The Rich History

From ancient Incan civilizations to the colonial era, Peru’s history spans centuries and layers of culture. Exploring Peru is like walking through a living museum, where every corner tells a story (and some corners might even whisper secrets if you listen closely).

“Understanding how deep their history is makes every experience there seem so much more profound,” Mekeila shared.

Having a knowledgeable guide is key to unlocking Peru’s historical depth, from the intricate stonework of the Inca Empire to the cultural layers of Cusco and beyond. On our Peru Yoga Adventure, you’ll experience a guided visit to both the Moray Agricultural Station and the Ollantaytambo Fortress, where history comes alive.

3. Machu Picchu

No visit to Peru is complete without experiencing the wonder of Machu Picchu. For Mekeila, it was an unforgettable highlight.

“The way we have it set up in our itinerary, where you hike the last stretch of the Inca Trail, makes the arrival feel so earned but not exhausting,” she explained. (Translation: epic but manageable — the hiking sweet spot.)

Staying at the Belmond, the only hotel at Machu Picchu, after the hike added an element of luxury, allowing for a restful evening before exploring the site up close the next morning. Machu Picchu’s breathtaking beauty and historical significance make it a must-see for any traveler. It’s truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

4. The Tea and Juices

Peru’s unique flavors are a treat for the senses (and your taste buds will thank you). Mekeila raved about muna tea, a mint-like beverage that helps with altitude sickness and overall well-being.

“Having a cup or two every day kept me feeling great and present for every adventure,” she said. (Altitude? What altitude?)

Another standout drink is chicha morada, a juice made from purple corn. “It’s like a non-alcoholic mulled wine, served hot or cold. So delicious! Who would’ve thought purple corn could taste that good?”

These comforting drinks are just one of the many ways Peru’s culinary offerings enhance the travel experience. Pro tip: Don’t skip dessert either — the sweet and creamy suspiro a la limeña is incredible!

5. The Mountains

Peru’s dramatic landscapes, especially its mountains, are nothing short of awe-inspiring. From the Inca Trail to the Salt Mines, the scenery left Mekeila in awe.

“The mountains are so big and present. They made me feel connected to something much larger than myself,” she shared. Sometimes, it’s nice to feel tiny (in the best possible way).

Whether you’re hiking through cloud forests or standing in the shadow of the Andes, the natural beauty of Peru’s mountains is both humbling and inspiring. It’s also the perfect excuse to upgrade your camera and capture some breathtaking views for your loved ones back home.
