Colombia Yoga Adventure

Trip in One Word: Rhythmic

What You’ll Experience in Colombia

Colombia is home to vibrant cities and people, unbelievable coffee, music pouring out of open windows, and some of the most beautiful places on the planet. Dive into culture, food, and rhythm on this yoga retreat in Colombia (with the help of local guides, of course). Hike mountain paths, take over a restaurant in Cartagena, drum to the beat on the beach and chillax while boating and snorkeling around the Rosario Islands. Explore by foot, beats, plane, hands and taste buds as you experience the best, and the tucked away, of Colombia.  Add color, rhythm, and spice to your life as you luxuriate on this yoga retreat in Colombia.

How You’ll Experience Colombia

You’ll start your yoga retreat in Colombia by exploring Medellín.  You’ll explore this vibrant city by foot, cable car and exceptional metro.  Walk through two no-words-can-do-it-justice ‘comunas’ in town with graffitied walls that tell the stories of struggle, difficulty and perseverance. Be blown away by locals and the unsung beauty of Medellín. Next you’ll head into the wilds to hike, harvest, taste and create; the ceramics center of El Carmen de Viboral will enchant and expand your artistic sensibilities.  Next Cartagena—a notoriously colorful and vibrant city—beckons! You’ll stay in the vibrant Getsemani region of town, known for its delicious food, impromptu dancing on the streets, beauty and diverse markets. You’ll head to the beach to learn and pound out the rhythm of the region and hop on a boat to relax on the islands. You’ll boat to the pristine Rosario Islands, swim, snorkel and eat fresh seafood. You’ll bookend your days with yoga sessions and mouthwatering cuisine to help you integrate and acclimate.

How You’ll Feel When You Return Home

You’ll return home with rhythm in your steps and vibrancy in your heart. You’ll bring back recipes, coffee, photos, new Spanish vocab, and technicolor memories to keep you smiling even on the dreariest of days. This yoga retreat in Colombia is truly legendary!

Colombia yoga retreat map with The Travel Yogi

1

DAY ONE

  • Arrival into Medellín
    • Most flights from the U.S. get in late in the day/evening so these few hours before bed are yours to rest or explore
  • Transfer into Medellín (approx 30-60min depending on traffic)
  • Head up to the rooftop restaurant of our chic Medellín hotel and enjoy the sites
    • The city sits in a valley so the lights at night, surrounded by the dark of the mountains, is a stunning view
  • Get some rest so you’re ready to roll in the morning!

2

DAY TWO

  • Fill up this morning and put on your walking shoes
  • Today we’re heading to the awesome Casa Kolacho and two local comunas
    • Medellín had some well known struggles with gang violence and Casa Kolacho turned a tough situation into an amazing community project teaching local kids graffiti art, dancing, DJ skills and more
    • After painting your own tag it’s time to head to two, very different, comunas
      • We’ll head to the popular Comuna 13 to see the graffiti stories of the region before heading to a much more local comuna where we’ll chat with locals and get an authentic day-by-day
  • We’ll move between the comunas on Medellín’s public transportation: their metro and cable cars – trust us, this is an experience all its own that the locals are rightfully proud of
  • Enjoy lunch today in Medellín’s central botanical gardens and peruse the crazy array of fruit at the farmer’s market
  • Say goodbye to amazing Medellín and head out to the verdant countryside
  • Unpack and unwind to the sounds of nature and then come together for evening yoga with incredible jungle forest views
  • Enjoy a dinner that is rightfully ‘cuisine’ with fresh ingredients from the local farms and an amazing chef to bring out their best!

3

DAY THREE

  • Morning yoga and full breakfast on the patio
  • Bring out your inner artist as we head to Colombia’s famous ceramic town of El Carmen de Viboral
    • The artisans of the region earn their titles daily with unique, handmade, designs desired all over the world
    • Get your hands into the mix in our family owned and operated ceramics shop – work with the local team as they walk you through their process
    • Pick out an unfinished piece and paint up your own masterpiece (these will be fired and delivered to you later in the week to take home)
  • Enjoy lunch in town at a local restaurant and have fun guessing which pieces might have come from the local factory you just left!
  • Head back into the wilderness with a few hours to relax on property
  • Gather for evening yoga and another gourmet dinner
  • After dinner enjoy an informative, slightly competitive, and fun chocolate tasting – a local delicacy

4

DAY FOUR

  • Morning yoga and patio breakfast
  • Put on your walking shoes for a walk to a local farm for a day-in-the-life
    • ‘Local’ is a way of life in the region so everything from the butter and cheese to the meat and veggies come from local farms.  Today  you’ll get hands-on at the dairy and harvest some of your own veggies (something good is always in season!) for dinner
  • This full day ends with a walk back to either the hotel for the adventurous or to a pick-up spot for a drive back
  • Stretch out those hamstrings with evening yoga
  • Enjoy an evening dinner which includes some of your day’s handiwork

5

DAY FIVE

  • Morning yoga, breakfast and packing for a departure to the coast
  • Before departing enjoy a tasty caffeine jolt with a coffee making/tasting expert – Colombians might know a thing or two about coffee (ha)
  • Drive to the Medellín airport to catch our flight to Cartagena
  • We kick off our stay in this vibrant and pulsating town with dinner and dancing…
  • Bring your dancing shoes for a salsa class and evening of moving and rhythm just outside the old walled city

6

DAY SIX

  • Everyone gets a little sleep in after last night’s dance party and a big buffet breakfast
  • Put on your walking shoes as we tour town from Getsemani to the old (pirate) walled town center
    • Enjoy and discover the history and unique culture of the different neighborhoods
  • Walk up an appetite as we finish by taking over a local restaurant to cook up some lunch
    • This gorgeous locally owned restaurant has its history hanging on the walls and a chef who will walk you through all kinds of delicious history and you chop and blend your lunch and refreshing mojito to enjoy
  • After lunch we’ll head out of town to a beach community that’ll have you movin’ and groovin’
    • Cartagena has a historically eclectic population who brought their culture and talents with them
    • Today you’ll get drumming with a local African/Caribbean inspired drum school
    • This community project keeps local traditions alive with an afterschool program for kids that goes far beyond the few hours they spend there
    • Local graduates and teachers ‘drum’ you through their mission, history and super amazing call-and-repeat class of our own
  • With the rhythm in your bones, head back into town to dance it out on your mats
  • Enjoy a dinner out in town tonight and enjoy the sounds and vibrancy of Getsemani
