When people think of Greenland, they usually think: ice. The image that comes to their minds is filled with towering icebergs, breaching whales, and landscapes so wild they barely seem real.
What they don’t picture? Puppies.
Every summer, a new generation of Greenlandic sled dog puppies tumbles into the world, turning quiet Arctic villages into an irresistible parade of floppy ears, oversized paws, and enough personality to derail even the most carefully planned stroll. Trust us on this one: if you’re trying to get somewhere on time, the puppies will have other plans. And in Greenland, it’s the puppies world and we’re just living in it.
As adorable as they are, these little fluffballs are more than just an unexpected highlight of the trip. They’re your introduction to one of Greenland’s oldest traditions.
Greenlandic sled dogs have been part of life in the Arctic for thousands of years
Bred for strength, endurance, and life above the Arctic Circle, Greenlandic dogs are working dogs that have helped communities travel across snow and ice long before roads connected towns. They’re powerful, independent, and deeply respected for the role they continue to play today.
So much so that law efforts have been put in place and various regions in Greenland to preserve the purity of the breed. Other projects are being facilitated as well to encourage the education of Greenlandic sledding culture, knowledge of the Greenlandic dog breed, and proper care for the working dogs so that it is not lost in Greenlandic culture.
The puppies, on the other hand, are still enjoying childhood. They wrestle with their siblings, bounce through town, and often wander over to investigate the latest group of visitors. You’ll find it surprising how different their behavior is to the adult working dogs that watch from a distance.
Watching them grow up is part of understanding Greenland itself. These aren’t dogs put on display for tourists. They’re part of everyday life, and meeting them offers a small but meaningful glimpse into the culture and traditions that make this place unlike anywhere else. Plus, a fun little cuddle from a fluffy puppy never hurts does it!
That’s what makes Greenland so special
It’s still a destination that catches people by surprise. Not because it isn’t spectacular, but because so many travelers simply haven’t thought to put it on their bucket list yet. Which is a little funny, considering what you’ll find here (not just ice!).
On our next trip to Greenland in July 2027, you’ll stand-up paddleboard or kayak among icebergs, watch whales surface beside your boat, hike beneath the midnight sun, forage for your lunch, wander colorful Arctic villages, and fall asleep listening to glaciers calve across the bay. You’ll probably collect a camera roll full of puppy photos, too.
The funny thing about Greenland is that almost everyone leaves asking the same question: “Why isn’t everyone talking about this place?” Our guess? They will be soon.
Greenland has all the ingredients people look for in an unforgettable adventure
It boasts incredible wildlife, dramatic landscapes, rich local culture, and experiences that are nearly impossible to replicate anywhere else. Word is getting out, little by little, and we have a feeling this remarkable corner of the Arctic won’t stay off the radar forever.
Until then, the puppies are happy to keep stealing the spotlight.
